My first Maryam Nassir Zadeh show took place in a two-story former drug store. Existing escalators were used as part of the runway. The environment was a hollowed out shell made to be filled with the vibrance of Maryam’s designs as well as the vibrations of live music by Sudan Archives.

My first time photographing at New York Fashion week, I was invited half way through the cycle (see ___). Over a year before that, I remember being fascinated by the feminine yet fluid forms of Nanushka blowing up before my eyes on the internet. It was the fashion presentation I was most aware and in awe of.
Life backstage was buzzy, angular and symbiotic. I was so afraid to get in anybody’s way, but everyone was so kind and understood that we were all creating simultaneously. Me, the makeup and hair artists, the designers, the musicians.
I was so lucky that the final fashion show I was invited to photograph the next year was that same brand I had fallen so hard for. To this day, it feels like fate. Here are the backstage images I was honored to take; stay tuned for a post on the show itself!

Back in September, half way through fashion week, I had given up the accumulated dreams of attending fashion week. I had emailed PR representatives, labels and publications for weeks and hardly received a response. “Maybe next time”, I thought. At first, it really bothered me, it was too late, there was nothing I could do.
I was fresh out of college, living in New Hampshire with my parents at the time and struggling to find a job. I had just recently been dumped, and my own motivation to “prove myself” knew no bounds.
I was in the middle of dinner in my parent’s screen porch, and I felt calm- I had finally accepted that it wasn’t going to happen this round, but it was okay.
Did I mention the porch doesn’t have Wifi?
The second I walked back inside the house to wash the dishes, my emails updated.
And there it was, my golden ticket- a seven word email.
“please send Julia invites to all shows”.
The next morning I was on the earliest bus to New York City, then I received my official invites.
